Self-compassion

It’s not for wimps

We can all agree that compassion is a quality we find commendable. But add the word self in front of it and suddenly we’re not so impressed.

We have no issue with extending tenderness to our children or understanding to our parents. We’re kind and sympathetic toward co-workers and empathic to our elderly neighbors. But looking in the mirror just doesn’t stir up the same impulse of benevolence. Unfortunately, most folks are their own worst critics.

It’s time pay attention to the self part of self-compassion.

Step One: Develop a Healthy Mindset

Take control of that voice in your head right now with a healthy mindset. Developing positive — vs negative — thought patterns is a crucial first step. It includes such things as optimism, not giving up, purpose, and accurate thinking.

Although one cannot find a definition for ‘positive attitude’ in a dictionary, a positive attitude is the right mental attitude in any given situation. Check out What is a Positive Attitude? for more details on how to develop a solid mental base from which to practice self-compassion.
